Spa Goals, Action Steps, and Mental Health
May 06, 2018We are expected to be peace love and light at all times being in the spa industry but its a challenge, especially when you are in an inevitable period of struggle. When you are feeling that low, showing up for our spas, for our clients, and our teams can feel like an insurmountable hurdle. When you are feeling down, please remember that you are not alone. The highs in owning your own business are incredible, but the lows are also very low. Today I talk about what to do when you are in a season of struggle.
Seek help.
When you are in the middle of it, you may not have the mental bandwidth to figure out what the next step is. This is when you need to seek help and confide in someone else. This can be a friend, a family member, a healthcare provider, a natural path. Pay attention to the whispers you feel when you know this is coming and do not wait. As a Leader you must protect yourself. And If you are not your best self you have nothing to give to your business and the people who depend on you.
Being a spa owner comes with its own set of challenges. We don't take time off, we can't "just stop". We do not have the health benefits that come with other forms of employment. Instead, we are in the business of caring for the wellness and self-care of others, even when we ourselves are not being taken care of. How do you emote positivity and calmness when inside you are feeling isolated and empty on the inside?
Here are some tools I rely on when I am going through a tough season.
-
Reach out - Easier said than done, I know. However, take pride in knowing that there is power in realizing we have been the shoulder for clients, we have borne witness to hurt for our team. And when you were there with them it feels good to support. Remember, they will feel the same good feeling when you ask them. People in your life want to be there for you.
-
This will happen again - Part of the human experience is to experience duality. Appreciate the good by enduring the bad. When we change the perspective to assume and expect the low points, it makes it easier to manage when you feel it coming. Have a plan.
-
Pay Attention To Your Physical Self - Address the burn out, listen to your body, focus on how to nurture and care for yourself. I noticed a tremendous difference when I started looking at ways to focus on my own health. I started working with a Naturalpath, I found ways to move my body, I took a closer look at my diet and what was not working. Doing this gives me the boost I need to keep going.
Mental health is important. Its important to acknowledge. Its important to recognize and its important to talk about. You are not alone. We are all in this together. Support yourself, support others around you.
